Funmilayo Ayo Edebiri is a native of Boston, Massachusetts, where she was born on October 3, 1995, and spent her early years in the Dorchester neighborhood.

She is a single child born to immigrant parents: her father, Mr. Edebiri, was from Edo State, Nigeria (Edo ethnic group), while her mother, Mrs. Edebiri, was from Barbados. 

Her parents regularly took the family to a Pentecostal church, and this is where she was first introduced to storytelling through the Bible and community acting.

In the Yoruba language, her name “Ayo” translates to “joy”. Her family was Christian, and she was brought up in a Christian environment.

Ayo was frequently a worried kid, but she found her way of making people laugh through her church performances and school activities.

She was a student at Boston Latin School where she also became a member of the improv club.

At first, she went to New York University (NYU) with the intention of being a teacher, but after deciding that she didn’t want to be a teacher, she changed to dramatic writing.

She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in dramatic writing in 2017.

On campus, aside from stand-up comedy, she also did internships at Upright Citizens Brigade, and through these activities as well as writing sessions, she improved her improv and writing abilities.

During college, Ayo Edebiri was engaging simultaneously in stand-up comedy, writing, and performing arts.

She became well-known for her initial appearances on Comedy Central’s Up Next and, for instance, her writing skills have been utilized in teams behind productions such as What We Do in the Shadows, Big Mouth (where she is also the voice of Missy), Dickinson, etc.

She co-created and acted in a web series with Rachel Sennott.

Her major recognition was a 2022 TV role as Sydney Adamu, a sous chef who is very determined, in The Bear, which led to her being praised as an actress capable of very subtle and complex portrayals.

Besides acting, she has also written and directed an episode of this series and released it to the public.
