The movie was shot in Cape Coast, Ghana. The scenery of the town was captured in the movie. The cinematography of the movie was above par. Meji Alabi stepped to this new challenge and delivered as expected.

‘Water and Garri’ Movie Analysis

The movie was shot by Meji Alabi. Meji Alabi is a renowned music director. He is Tiwa Savage’s most used director. The movie also has soundtracks from Olamide, Young Jonn, and Ayra Starr.

‘Water ad Garri’ features Tiwa Savage as the lead actor. It also features actors like Jemima Osunde, Mike Afolarin, and Andrew Bunting. Tiwa Savage is known for her musical prowess. She has a soothing voice. However, her movie debut did not hit the mark. Her role as Aisha did not pass the finesse and depth the character needed.

Andrew Bunting, the other actor failed to carry out his role effectively. He mumbled over his lines and didn’t deliver the interpretation the character needed. His character was stagnant and left viewers unsatisfied with his performance.

Four Reasons Tiwa Savage’s Movie Was Poorly Rated

Here are 4 reasons Tiwa Savage’s Movie was poorly rated:

1. Directing

Acting is all about translating roles into reality. The acting performance of many actors in the movie was a bit questionable. The role of the director in this regard was to direct the actor’s mind into the movie. The cast could have done much better in bringing life to the roles. Take an instance:

Aisha (Tiwa Savage) who is a first-time actor could have been more captivating if there had been more guidance. Due to the lack of guidance, there was not much emotion placed in the movie. There was a part of the movie where one of the actors died. In that scene, there was not much emotion in that part of the movie.

Also, there was not much chemistry between the actors, in the movie. Jemima Osunde who played the role of Tiwa Savage’s cousin did not convey this. However, it could be said that Jemima may have still felt nervous because she was working with an international star.

So, the closeness between them was not as strong as you would imagine. This showed that stronger directing could have made the feelings more natural.

2. Lack of Narrative

There was a lack of narrative in the movie. The movie failed to give in-depth characters to the movie. Apart from being a fashion designer, there was no clear identity of who she was. She was portrayed as owning a fashion business in Los Angeles before coming back to the Eastside.

After her return, there was no clear statement on her desire to go back to Los Angeles. When in reality, business owners in a commercial city like Los Angeles would not want to lose their clients. Also, there was no clear identity of the person who killed Kay. There was no name behind the character that killed Kay.

Who is he and why does he want to become the king of the street? Many questions were left unanswered in the storyline. Also, Aisha was highlighted to have scary flashbacks. These flashbacks were meant for her to reminisce about past events. However, it was very ineffective.

3. Cultural Background

This is one of the most confusing aspects of the movie. It was not clear if the location of the movie was in Ghana or Nigeria. The cast’s cultural background lacks consistency. In the movie, some of the cast bear names affiliating to the Yoruba ethnic group.

However, the location of the movie did not portray any Yoruba ethnic background. Other characters had Ghanaian accents. In all of this, there was no clear identification with the ethnic group.

The confusion made it hard to point out if the movie was made in Ghana or Nigeria. It was also difficult to know whether the cast were to act or speak like Nigerians or Ghanaians. Another cause for confusion was the fact that ‘Eastside’ was portrayed to be a violent community. No scene showed people fighting or quarreling in the movie.

4. Storylines

The plot of the movie gives the impression that the film is without purpose. The movie doesn’t answer some related questions. If the storyline had been more straightforward, it would have been easier to understand. Take an instance:

The movie painted the story that Aisha traveled to the country because her cousin was killed. It would have been more natural if Aisha had visited the graveside of her relative. In contrast, she didn’t even appear to show any form of grief.

Conclusion

To conclude, the ‘Water and Garri’ produced by Tiwa Savage is below par. As highlighted earlier, the movie boasts good cinematography. This is all to the credit of her long-time director, Meji Alabi.

However, the movie lacks an in-depth storyline and narrative. We understand that this might be her first movie, but more work needs to be done next time to make it a global hit. All in all, this doesn’t take her ability to produce great songs. Thanks for reading this article and tell us what you think in the comment section.!
