Nigeria is a country where religion is vital in shaping the culture and society, yet there are None Religious among us. To many, they see religion as a means of communicating with a sacred person. Others, on the other hand, have rejected this idea.

Some also see it as a means of business in the modern world, where religious leaders cash out from their members. A lot of believe in different religious gatherings. The very few people who have rejected this idea have in their figurative books many reasons to do so.

AjeboDanny

AjeboDanny is a well-known social media influencer. He is known for giving his opinion on social issues, mainly on X. It is also important to note that Daniel does not shy away from being generous when he needs to. 

Recently, he has been in the news for an issue concerning his belief in God. It all started with a video shared on X which features Danny comfortably seated in his car while a woman questions him about the role of God in his life. The woman criticizes Danny for crediting his success to himself rather than to God. In response, Danny quickly counters her argument.

Ever since the video was published AjeboDanny has received criticism. Some have even hurled insults at him. However, in recent days, Danny has clarified his stance claiming that he does believe in God. He claims to have a problem with people who rate their God over ‘god’. You can see more on his X page.

Bisi Alimi

Bisi Alimi is a gay activist who gained prominence for publicly expressing his interest in homosexuality in Nigeria. He was born on 17 January 1975. Bisi had his tertiary education at the University of Lagos, Nigeria. He also claimed to be an HIV patient. 

In 2017, he gained the attention of the Nigerian audience by declaring that there is no God. Bisi continued by saying that there is no proof of God’s existence. However, the truth is that Bisi did not begin as an atheist.

Bisi talked to people about God during his secondary school days. The gay activist also shared a video of himself in a park station declaring the gospel to both drivers and passengers. In an interview, he disclosed that he sings gospel songs while in the bathroom.  But that doesn”t make him religious, does it? 

Bisi also claimed that he believed in people he could see. He also claimed that he believes things he can see. Touching his spouse (in the interview), he cannot believe God exists because he cannot see and feel him.

Alimi also revealed that he took his spouse to the church although for a different reason. He claimed that religion is a big part of Nigerian culture.

Leo Igwe

Leo Igwe is a Nigerian activist and humanist. Leo is a Western and South African representative  International Humanist and Ethical Union. One of Igwe’s movements is the Atheist Alliance International, and the Center For Inquiry–Nigeria.

This movement has led to his arrest on several occasions. Also, he had joined voices in campaigning against the impact of child witchcraft accusations. This campaign had brought him at loggerheads with people who believed in witchcraft.

Why does Igwe who did not believe in witchcraft still reject the idea that there is a God? The answer is not far-fetched. In Volume 8 of his book, he claimed that religion had people doing things that baffled him.

He still does not understand the reason people contribute money to build a church while they languish in poverty. “Let us not forget, these were places where spirits, not human beings, were supposed to ‘live’ “. 

Another issue that baffled Igwe was the items people describe as a person that has divine powers (god). Many attribute this person to a cowry shell, rocks, metals, carved items, and some even kola nuts.

In Nigeria, it is no strange sight to see someone attribute non-living things as items that have powers. Igwe surely grew up in a typical Nigerian environment and has a good sense of observation.

Wole Soyinka

Wole Soyinka is a Nigerian essayist in the English Language. Soyinka was given birth to in Ogun State, Nigeria. Soyinka has been a professor at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife for 24 years. In 1999, he was made Professor Emeritus.

Talking about religion, Wole Soyinka does not have any interest in any religion. He stated that he is a mythologist. To him, deities are something that is creatively real and his companion in both the real and his imaginative process. 

In 2023, he put his pen into action. He wrote to the Emir of Ilorin regarding the cancellation of a festival. However, he was heavily criticized because of this act. But he has stood firm in his belief and act that he is none non-religious man.

All in all, religion is a topic that is subjective to everyone. The individuals highlighted in this article are free to practice any idea they believe in. We respect their belief.
