Check out The 5 Controversial Miss Outs At The AMVCA 2024.
Like every other big award show, the African Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) came with some controversies. From the outfits to the award winners and the like. However, for this post, we will concern ourselves with the controversies around the award selections at the AMVCA awards.
Here are the 6 first-timers to ever win the AMVCA awards this year 2024.
In some of the nomination lists that were announced before the show, there were already favorites for certain award categories. However, this year AMVCA show came with some surprises. In this article, you will be reading about five of the controversial award missouts at this year’s AMVCA show. Here they are:
1. A Tribe Called Judah
A Tribe Called Judah movie was arguably one of the biggest misses from this year’s African Magic Viewers Choice Awards. This movie had five nominations at this year’s award show. The categories for which it was nominated included Best Supporting Actor, Best Movie Categories, Best Lead Actress, Best Writing in a Movie, and Best Makeup.
Despite being the favorite to win in these categories, the movie failed to pick up any awards in any of the categories it was nominated in.
The movie, A Tribe Called Judah broke blockbuster records in Nigeria. It becomes the first Nigerian movie to earn N1 billion naira in revenue. This was thanks to the amazing work done behind the scenes pre and post-production of the movie. The movie which features Funke Akindele, Timini Egbuson, and Genevieve Umeh did not fail to live up to expectations in the Box Office.
The storyline of the movie was about a young woman who gave birth to children from different fathers. Despite all the suffering she faced, she ensured that she took care of her boys. However, tragedy struck and the boys were left to cater for her. Until the very end, the movie was filled with suspense and other elements that made the movie a spectacular movie.
2. The Black Book
When mentioning a Nigerian movie released in 2023, that had the best action plays, then The Black Book ranks high up there. It was because of the work put in the aspect of cinematography, and script writing that made it get five nominations at the 2024 AMVCA.
However, despite loud cheers for the movie to be awarded a more prestigious award like the Best Movie Category, it was only recognized for its work in the editing aspect. As a result, it was declared the winner of the Best Editing category.
The Black Book featured actors such as Sam Dede, Richard Mode Damijo, Shaffy Bello, and the like. The sweet combination of the oldies and the new-generation actors was one of the hits of this movie. In fact, because of the impressive storyline and the experienced cast in the movie, the movie had a higher number of replays among Nigerian movie lovers — something not common among movie freaks in Nigeria.
The story of the movie was about a man whose son was killed due to mismatched identity. The movie was a reflection of the common injustices faced by the layman of Nigeria. It depicted how corrupt politicians use the police force to interfere in the justice system. However, for the movie, The Black Book, a twist unfolded and that was what made the movie a relatable one.
3. Afamefuma
Afamefuma was also one of the most nominated movies at the 2024 AMVCA. Even though many people expected that the movie would get at least an award for all the workouts, it was snubbed at Africa’s biggest movie recognition show.
Afamefuma was nominated in four categories at the AMVCA but failed to get any award home. The movie got nominations in the Best Lead Actor, Best Director, Best Writing in a Movie, and Beat Supporting Actor categories but the producers and cast of the movie left the event empty-handed.
The movie was cast by experienced and professional movie actors in Nigeria. Some of the names featured in the movie were Alex Ekubo, Kanayo O. Kanayo, and Stanley Nze. These actors put up a good show in the movie but unfortunately, their work was not enough for the movie to land a plaque.
The factor that made the movie stand out was the uniqueness of the storyline. The movie showed the Igbo apprenticeship system. This was the first of its kind in the Nigerian movie space. The movie showed the importance of cultivating peaceful relationships between family and friends. If you asked for a movie deserving of an award at the AMVCA, I’ll mention Afamefuma.
4. The Real Housewives Of Lagos (Season 2)
The Real Housewives Of Lagos (Season 2) was one of the shows that was snubbed at the recently concluded 2024 AMVCA. The show which had movie freaks in Nigeria talking was arguably one of the biggest snubs at this year’s AMVCA.
In fact, for some people, Season 2 was an even better version of Season 1 and as such, should have at least won a major award at the AMVCA show this year. The show was nominated under the Best Unscripted Series category but lost the category to GH Queens (a movie series made in Ghana).
The Real Housewives Of Lagos (Season 2) featured Nollywood stars such as Faith Morey, Iyabo Ojo, Tania, and the like. The series was the one to watch if you love the unending drama of love, friendship, banter, and hate. In 2023, the series was one of the most followed series in the Nigerian movie industry.
5. Skinny Girl In Transit
Skinny Girl In Transit is also among the movies that were not recognized at the AMVCA 2024. The movie series was one of the most followed online series in 2023. Thanks to this series, Ndani TV rose higher in followers because of the high followership. At the AMVCA 2024, it lost the Best Writing Series category.
It was one of the movie series that almost everyone expected to get an award or two at the just concluded AMVCA. The movie which features acts like Ngozi Nwosu, Beverly Naya, and the like had shouts from the crowd in support of their awaited victory at the award show. However, that would be at another time.
The Summary
In summary, it is good to note that the fact that a movie got nominated for a movie category is enough proof that the movie did something well. So, in effect, this means that the movies or movie series that got snubbed at this year’s AMVCA show are equal in value to those that got awarded.
