As you know, Blown Boy Ru is Ruger‘s first album since leaving his former label. The song is very energetic, with him boasting about his catalogues.

He sold himself as one of the biggest African exporters with his amazing flows.

Sincerely, his intro track is a good one. Currently, it is the best dancehall-themed introduction since the beginning of the year.

  • 2. SoulMates

SoulMates starts with melodic instruments. This one is made for lovebirds. It starts as a passionate appeal to a girl to leave her man for him.

It is a sweet blend of dancehall and R&B genres. Musically, it is an appealing song that celebrates the beauty of loving a girl.

The chorus “muah” reminds his lover of how it’ll end up if she agrees. Later in the song, Ruger continues to flatter the girl. All in all, it highlights Ruger’s masterpiece in writing romantic songs.

  1. Give Away

Giveaway is the third song off the Blown Boy Ru Album. Typical of Ruger, he praises Jesus for helping him in the music industry.

The instrumental of the song starts with an up-tempo beat. He swiftly talked about receiving blessings for his hard work in the industry. The song also had Zlatan Ibile on the track.

Zlatan Ibile didn’t disappoint in his verse. He quickly referenced how he has been blessed financially. Thanks to his financial wealth, he can cover the bills of his close family members.

One thing spectacular about Zlatan is that he did the basics required in the song and it was more than enough.

  1. Jay Jay

Ruger’s ability to play with words is very evident in this song. Of course, he unleashed his playboy antics when writing this song. Recall that this song was one of the first songs released before the full album release.

Titling the song “Jay Jay” just helped him reference the extent of his Playboy activities.

The chorus boldly says, “Pregnancy is not for me.” If you are in that shoe, then this song is best for you. I best believe you can totally relate to this track!

  1. Dudu

Dudu is another song off Blown Boy Ru. The song begins with a beat similar to Jay Jay’s. The message is simply clear – get this girl in my duvet. To him, he wants that girl because she is the best amongst others.

However, she has to give him her consent first. The Kranium verse was one of the best in the album.

He asserts that the girl wants him, and he’ll do the needful. You can tell that the chorus was a masterpiece because it matched the flow of the song.

  1. Rub Minds

Rub Minds is one of the best songs on the album. The song gave praises to Ruger’s songwriting relevance. The message of the song revolved around linking with a girl he met some time ago.

For him, he is trying to relocate the girl to rub minds. Probably, trying to continue their earlier conversation.

The latter part of the song highlights Ruger’s seriousness in relocating with the girl. In the song, it seems his rhyme pattern was targeted at making it easier for listeners to remember his lyrics.

  1. Toma Toma

This song is both unique and inspirational. It is unique in the sense that the instrumentals were inspired by Brazilian sounds. The song highlights Ruger’s consistency in the music industry.

  1. Wish You Well

Ruger’s intro to the song tells the whole story. “Wish You Well” highlights Ruger’s intentions with the girl. Despite his effort to keep his girl, she wanted out.

He highlights that he still feels connected to her in some way. Ruger requested the services of Valient.

Valient’s contribution to the song was more than impressive. His Jamaican rendition of the chorus made the melodies interesting to listen to.

  1. Toro

Toro begins with an attractive melody. This is for those who want to crawl back to their former lover. His rhymes in this song gave insight into his aim for getting close to his partner.

No doubt the lyrics of this song would touch the inner romantic part of you. The song describes Ruger singing to his muse, whom he cheated on.

As humans, we make mistakes, You can tell Ruger lost a good one right there!

  1. 99

99 begins with a guitar-themed beat style. Just like other Ruger songs, it emphasizes the way he would make out to a girl.

A description of his intentions was made clear in the songs. However, the song emphasizes consent from the girl.

  1. Runaway

Runaway is another song off the Blown Boy Ru. With Runaway, Ruger pleads with his muse not to stay in a toxic relationship.

He got the help of Jamaican musician Haile. The chemistry of both artists in the song made it easier to understand.

  1. Hell Cat

Hellcat is quite different from the normal loverboy Ruger. Ruger, here, boasts of his entrance into the music industry and where he is now.

To him, he compares his achievement to a stray cat who finds his way.

  1. Blown Boy Anthem

Blown Boy Anthem is just asserting his stay in the industry. He literally would not give in to any pressure from any godfather.

He shares a line talking about the betrayal he experienced in the industry. This is the last song of the Blown Boy Ru Album.

Verdict: Overall, Ruger’s album is very good. However, it heavily relies on his dancehall rhymes. Additionally, Blown Boy Ru was focused on the romantic part of Ruger. All in all, it is rated 8.7/10

Conclusion

Ruger’s body of work is very impressive. However, the album relies on a particular kind of sound – Dancehall. It seems this was a deliberate act to stamp his legacy as a Dancehall/Afrobeats artiste.

Ruger’s spotlight in the entertainment industry is indeed a fast-tracked one. If you find value in this album review, kindly share it with others, too. Thank you!
